Scottsdale Voters Say YES To Protecting The McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Improving Scottsdale Parks, and Enhancing Public Safety
Propositions 490 and 491 Approved By Voters
Scottsdale’s parks and open spaces as well as public safety will get the resources they need and Scottsdale residents will get the services they deserve thanks to the passage of Props 490 and 491.
Prop 490, in addition to helping revitalize and maintain Scottsdale’s parks, beginning in the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt, will provide ongoing care and protection for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve for the next thirty years. That includes wildlife habitat protection and the long-term health and sustainability of the land. It will also provide funding to prevent and fight fires in and around the Preserve, as well as increased Police Rangers for the parks and the Preserve.
Prop 491 will adjust state spending limits, giving the city the ability to spend the money it already has on services and public safety.
The Vote Yes-Yes Scottsdale PAC led the effort to pass Props 490 and 491.
“We’re extremely grateful to the voters of Scottsdale who supported us. It’s my sincere hope that over time, as this money is spent wisely and responsibly, those who voted no will come to see what wonderful benefits Props 490 and 491 will bring to our city,” said Campaign Coordinator Carla.
Former Scottsdale Mayor and Campaign Chairwoman Mary Manross said, “Almost sixty years ago Scottsdale had the wisdom and foresight to create the Greenbelt and, thirty years ago, to create the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. That wisdom and foresight are still with us today.”
Yes on 490 will improve citywide parks, beginning in the Indian Bend Wash, and maintain the McDowell Sonoran Preserve by providing voter protected resources needed for upkeep and protection of two of Scottsdale’s greatest achievements.
Proposition 490:
Prioritizes investing first in the aging Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt parks.
Increases high-quality maintenance for all Scottsdale parks.
Adds additional Police Ranger Patrol resources to parks and the Preserve trailheads for increased security.
Supports Preserve ongoing care, including wildlife habitat protection.
Adds additional Fire Department resources, including a second Technical Rescue Team and increased fire prevention and fire fighting funds.
Prop 490 takes the place of an expiring city sales tax with a new one at a lower rate.
Due to spending limits, imposed by the state 20 years ago, city services have fallen behind Scottsdale’s substantial population growth thereby impacting safety and our quality of life.
Proposition 491:
Allows the City of Scottsdale to spend revenue which is already being generated for services that include police, fire, parks, and road maintenance.
Unanimously supported by Scottsdale’s Mayor and City Council and is also endorsed by Scottsdale police and fire organizations.
Is not a tax increase or budget override.
“Smartest way to fund critical city services.”
“Scottsdale has public safety needs that are not keeping pace with inflation. Its residents deserve the highest quality parks and open spaces and the resources to keep them safe. That’s why the Scottsdale Fire Fighters Association supports Propositions 490 and 491.”
